Epsom salt is not the cure-all your feed store says it is

Magnesium helps exactly one problem, and it is probably not the one your tomatoes have.

Somewhere along the way, Epsom salt became gardening's duct tape. It is credited with fattening tomatoes, greening leaves, preventing blossom end rot, boosting seed germination, sweetening peppers, and deterring slugs. A bag costs a few dollars, the ritual feels agricultural, and the advice is repeated by people who clearly love their gardens. It is also, for most gardens, somewhere between useless and mildly harmful.

Epsom salt is magnesium sulfate: magnesium and sulfur, nothing else. Both are real plant nutrients, and that kernel of truth powers the whole legend. Magnesium sits at the center of the chlorophyll molecule, so a genuine deficiency shows up as yellowing between the veins of older leaves while the veins stay green, a pattern distinctive enough to recognize once you have seen it.

Here is the part the folklore skips: actual magnesium deficiency is uncommon in home gardens. It shows up mainly in sandy, acidic, heavily leached soils and in a few intensively cropped situations. Most garden beds, especially ones fed compost now and then, carry all the magnesium their plants can use. Adding more nutrient to a soil that is not short of it does not produce bonus growth, any more than a second daily multivitamin produces bonus health.

The blossom end rot claim deserves special attention because it is the most repeated and the most backwards. End rot, the black sunken patch on the bottom of tomatoes and peppers, is a calcium delivery problem, almost always caused by uneven watering rather than missing calcium. Epsom salt contains no calcium at all. Worse, magnesium and calcium compete for uptake at the roots, so dosing a struggling plant with magnesium can crowd out the calcium it was already fighting to move. The favorite remedy for end rot can help cause it.

Controlled trials back this up. Where researchers have compared Epsom-treated and untreated vegetables in ordinary soil, the treated plots have shown no yield or flavor advantage; the sweeter-peppers and bigger-tomatoes claims trace back to testimonials, not tests. Every claimed benefit routes through the same gate: it helps only if your soil was short of magnesium to begin with.

The slug claim is the quickest to dispatch: the mineral trail dissolves with the first watering or dew, and slugs, as with the eggshell rings we covered recently, simply glide over or around it. Nothing about magnesium sulfate troubles a slug.

There is also a real cost to routine use beyond the wasted dollars. Excess magnesium leaches through the soil into waterways, can stunt growth at genuinely high doses, and sprayed on leaves in sun it can scorch the foliage it was meant to green. None of this is catastrophic at backyard scale; all of it is a poor trade for zero benefit.

So when does Epsom salt earn its place? When a soil test says so. If your leaves show that between-the-veins yellowing on older growth, do not guess: a basic soil test from your extension service costs about the price of the Epsom bag and settles the question. If it confirms low magnesium, a tablespoon dissolved in a gallon of water around the base of affected plants is a fair correction, and roses, tomatoes, and peppers in sandy acidic soils are the classic patients.

If the test comes back normal, the honest prescription for nearly every 'my plants look tired' situation is unglamorous: compost, steady deep watering, and mulch. Compost quietly supplies magnesium along with everything else, which is a large part of why composted gardens never seem to need the miracle cures.

The pattern to notice, and it repeats across garden folklore, is that cheap plus plausible plus occasionally-true is how a myth earns immortality. Epsom salt fixed somebody's magnesium-starved roses in sandy soil once, and the story traveled without the context. Your garden runs on evidence: test first, amend second, and spend the saved dollars on compost.
