About Nell Harding, and this almanac.

I write The Garden Almanac from a back garden that gets one frost too early every year. No degrees, no titles, a lot of dead tomato plants, and a habit of checking the porch light for toads before bed. Nell Harding is the name I write under.

The almanac started as a Facebook page, where I post every morning and evening through the season: what the creature in the leaf pile is doing this week, why the tomato went quiet in the fridge, which night to take the cuttings. Readers argued with some of it, corrected some of it, and kept asking me to put the useful parts somewhere they could find again. This site is that somewhere.

Every entry here grows out of one of those daily posts and the questions left under it. I check the claims against extension fact sheets and the published studies, I name the region a rule holds for, and when readers catch me out I say so in the entry. The site opened in August 2026 and adds two entries a day while the season runs. There are no pop-up walls and no life stories in front of the recipe, just the useful part.
